With road speed limits respected, your maximum speed is min(road number, speed limit) in miles per hour. A47 tops out at 47 mph; M1 at 1 mph. B6047 keeps its usual limit. A1(M) counts as 1, and M6 Toll as 6. Where a road has multiple numbered references, the lowest number wins. Unnumbered roads keep their normal limit.
Turn on Ignore road speed limits to use the road number directly: A1000 runs at 1,000 mph, even on a 30 mph section. Unnumbered roads keep their normal limit. The normal comparison still uses mapped or estimated limits.
The planner finds the quickest journey using those speeds, so a small road can beat a motorway. Switch to normal limits to see the difference. Journey times assume constant travel at the modelled maximum speed.
A static OpenStreetMap road database for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Road data and route calculations stay in your browser.
Tagged speed limits take priority. Missing limits use estimates, marked in the route breakdown. Those estimates, missing map data and unsupported conditional restrictions can affect the route. This is an experiment, not a navigation service.
Towns are searched locally. Postcode searches use Postcodes.io; map backgrounds are loaded from OpenStreetMap. You can also enter latitude, longitude or click the map.
